Hannon Offshore Drilling Equipment just wrapped up a major collaboration that started over two years ago when a long-time customer (an international pipeline repair company) ordered two custom-designed long stroke hydraulic cylinders used for hot tapping a large-diameter pipeline. This initiative yielded successful “firsts” for both companies. It was the first time Hannon provided cylinders used in hot tapping operations and the first time its customer executed a 60” pipe saw cut and 20’ perpendicular plug. The joint effort took 26 months to complete.
As part of the job, Hannon custom manufactured two 20’ hydraulic actuators – the longest stroke cylinders Hannon has produced for this customer to-date. The cylinders included mounted control valves and one inch increment etched piston rods with operator viewing ports to observe actuator stroke. The hot tapping will save the end customer time and money as well as improve long-term pipeline production. Additionally, the hot tapping allows modifications or repairs to pipelines without disrupting critical plant operations.
